OK, you got me on that one. I just checked some of the 3DMark download sites....never heard of this before....sounds pretty cool....using XP O.S. with this P.O.S. so going to download the 3DMark 06 and try it out......probably going to open Pandora's box

I have never ending nightmares with this one, but it is to be expected...the HDD came out of an HP I bought on clearance from staples about 5 yrs. ago

Let me know if there is anything else I need to know or get prior to building

what do you think of over clocking...good, bad or indifferent? Is it necessary, Is the performance increased enough to make it worth the risk? Is it Risky?

lol no thats not good at all. wow.. all i can saw is wow lol.

I dont think theres much else you need to assemble other than artic silver thermal paste. This goes between the heatsink and cpu. The heatsink usually comes with a basic solution already on it that is ok but just not as good as artic is. I remove the factory stuff with rubbing alcohol and apply artic silver to the top of the cpu, you want to put a spot on the center of the cpu about the size of a pea then add the clean heatsink on top. Temps normally run 10-15 degrees lower by using it, big difference when your gaming.

I got to run for now, ill post back tomorrow my thoughts on OC'ing.

what is UDMA-66?

I have driverheaven Tunexp 1.5 and on the hardware tab, one of the options is to enable UDMA-66. Was wondering what it is and if it would do anything to help my dinosaur run better?

My HDD is a P.O.S. and my DVD drive but the mobo, processor and ram are rather new.

I know it should be running faster than it does, I know there is a problem somewhere but i'm not tech savvy enough to know what it is.

Is there any freeware programs that will scan and report problems with hardware or configuration?

UDMA 66 is basically a placebo, when introduced it made people think they were getting more than they actually were. Its a mode for HDD's that determines the speed of a hard drives transfer rates. Chances are your running a ATA 100 drive anyhow which would surpass UDMA 66. This is also IDE based so if your using SATA drive(s) it doesnt apply anymore.

Keep in mind the test you ran are video based, cpu and ram are factors but not nearly as heavily as the vid card, which is your choke point.

Im pretty out dated myself, been on this config 2 years now but still holding strong.

something that may cater more to your machine is pcmark 05 as it test everything, not just video




Now to back up some, overclocking: fun but not all together practical.
I have overclocked every aspect of pc's that i could think to. Cpu's, mem, video cards, pci and pci-e slots and its all circumstantial.

Generally, theres not enough performance gained to justify a constant overclock. In gaming, and ive dont this is times past, you can sometimes overclock enough to smooth out a demanding game (crysis) and pick up a few more FPS but the downside is it creates more heat and usually leads to less playing time due to lockups. After market coolers make a big difference along with water cooling but thats a matter of cost vs desire. In talking benchmarks, i can overclock this very machine to its max and go from 10K to 13K scores. Again, that will smooth out some rough games but thats about it. In all honestly though, since i dropped the 8800 in i havent even come close to needing to OC anything. its more than handled anything i threw at it.

Are there any freeware programs that will scan and report problems with hardware or configuration?

I don't want to buy a benchmark program right now...not till I get my new system. I am presently unemployed and don't have the cash to spend on an out dated machine My new system will be built with my 2010 Tax Return!

Everything runs super slow on this PC, therefore, I don't think it's just a problem with video card.

My P.O.S. takes 3 1/2 minutes to boot and just as long, if not longer to shut down! I'm no tech...but I don't think it should take that long...it didn't used to take that long!

My P.O.S. has picked up many viruses over the years...a few I couldn't get cleared out of the system so I formatted the HDD.

I have had to format it at least 6-7 times.....this may be the heart of my problems but I don't know!

reg seeker is a great program but believe it or not thats common for a machine thats never ran it.

is a pretty handy tool also. It gives a decent report with comparisons on hardware performance.

3.5 min is just ridiculous, posting a log may help too. Scan and save log file, when its done it will open a note pad with alot of info. Copy and paste it in a reply here.

You said you have to format several times, are you getting an error when you format or lockups or just whats happening? I guess what im getting at is the drive might be due for a low level format or otherwise known as a zero fill.

What I meant on the formatting is there have been many times I have had to format, Never a problem with formatting until this last time. That was my fault...have no floppy drive ...couldn't get to a format command, could only run F-Disk to partition my drive....was working off the win98 OS disk...it has no format command.

I found a way to get to the old files after F-Disk...when I install an OS I always copy to HDD and install from there....so i ran a dir on the drive and found a format command that way.

My XP disk is an upgrade disk so I have to install win98 first then upgrade!!!!!

What OS do you use??? win7??? I was wondering if it was any good?....isn't it just Vista with a few new adjustments???? I want to go top of the line, but I hated Vista. I'm kinda slow to accept new things though!!!!

after 2 days of tweaking:

first thing ive noticed is your OS is installed to I instead of C, was that intentional?

you have a few things wasting resources if your not using them all the time. One is freecorder and another is real player. Are you using an uninterruptible power supply? Task manager suggest that you are is why im asking.


I can bet you a huge part of your problems are the install your doing. 1, you really really need a full disk but still i dont think you should have to go through the process your doing. The way your suppose to be able to install is boot from the xp cd, it should be able to setup partitions and format. A NTFS partition would cause you alot less problems then the fat32 i suspect your running. It should start installing from the upgrade disk and only ask you to insert the 98 cd at a point during the install only to verify you have it. I can remember installing win 2000 that way several times and the xp upgrade was "suppose" to do the same.

Im using the tried and true xp pro w/sp3 still. I stay pretty close to the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" theory. Vista is shit, hands down. I hate to see a vista box come my way and im to the point where im going to refuse cleanups. It will either be wiped from get go or bring it elsewhere. Win 7 "im told" is what vista should have been. I havent used it personally. Microsoft treated us to the release candidate version with i think it was a 90 day key and i havent tried it. The final thats out now is labeled to be more stable and use less resources than vista.

Like I mentioned, I had a lot of problems when I formatted last time. Somehow I ended up with 3 partitions ( C: fat32... D: NTFS ...I: NTFS ) Not sure how this happened but I: is my largest partition with 90% of my storage space.

I think it may be time to format again and clean up this clusterfuck !!!!

I use freecorder regularly but I hate realplayer and thought I had uninstalled it. It is gone now!!!!

I had a UPS hooked up to my machine but it is not hooked up at this time!
