installing new hd

Postby Jokebook » Fri Feb 13, 2004 7:30 am

i currently have 2 comps each with a 20 gb hd. i am putting a new hd in one and want to use the old 20 gb hd in the new comp. Can i just install the hd as is in the new comp and then reformat??? or do i need ot wipe it before hand???

Also the brands are different...should this cause a conflict??

thx in advance

The brand shouldn't matter.
Not exactly sure I understand you correctly. If you mean you're going to take one computer's HD and put it in the other computer, then that would work. Install on the same IDE cable and set the jumpers on the original to "Master" and the addition to "Slave". This leaves the other computer ready to accept the new HD.
If you meant you want to put one of the HD's in a computer with a new HD you will either need to install an Operating System on the new HD first and install the second as described above or install the old HD as the "Master"(So it will boot from the old O.S.) and the new HD as the "Slave".
Yes, you can format the old HD after you install it in another computer. Just make sure you select the right drive letter during the process.

using it for additional hd space

Postby Jokebook » Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:25 pm

I am taking 1 of the hds out of the old comp and putting it in the other for additional storage space....The hd that i am putting in for new space currently had an OS already and installed, as well as programs...my question is

When putting the new hd in the other comp for additional hd space can i hook it up on the same ide cable w/o wiping the hd first, then reformat it and use it as additional hd space???

Or should i clean the hd off first to avoid having a conflict since both of the hds on the system will both have OS installed upon the first boot of the system after i put the new hd in....

Does this make since???

thx in advance

You can format it after you put it the computer. That way you can transfer any info on it to the other drive. Just follow the instructions I posted as per Master/Slave.

I have an a7v333-x mobo in the comp that I am installing a seagate 80gb hd in. My mobo says it is is ultra DMA 133 compatible, but the hd says it is ultra ata 133....is this going to cause a conflict????

Also how do I make sure that the hd is running at 133 instead of 100 or 66.

One other thing I am putting a ATI 9800 Pro 128 mb in this machine as well. When reading about the card on some websites it said to make sure you have an AGP 3 slot.....I know this mobo has an AGP slot but I was unaware of any differences in AGP slots besides 4x or 8x.

I have gone to the ASUS website and looked @ the specs on my board....but haven't had any luck finding anything on what type of AGP slot it is, other than it is 4x

Do you know if this video card should work with that comp??? and mobo

thx in advance

There should be no problems using the seagate hard drive
and the Ati video card with the Asus a7v333-x motherboard.
