Computer stalls, memory?

Postby halfsoul » Wed Mar 10, 2004 5:11 am

I hope someone can help me. Occassionally my computer will start stalling randomly. By "stalling" I mean that it exibits the following symptoms:
- The mouse cursor jerks around instead of smoothly moving across the screen
- Mouse clicks and key presses are delayed until the "stalling" stops
- The system clock stops ticking until the stalling stops
- All processes are temporarily halted until stalling stops
- Stalling lasts a couple of seconds
- Stalls occur between 10 seconds and 45 seconds apart

The newest discovery I made is that within System Monitor, the stalls seem to coincide with memory page-in and page-out activity. However, it is not because I don't have enough memory - my computer has 256 megs to play with.

Please help! I'll be happy to provide any and all helpful information.

What Process are running in the background when this is happening?
What Programs are in your Startup?
Start / Run / Type msinfo32.exe Click "Ok" / Expand "Software Enviroment" / Double Click on "Running Tasks" / Copy and paste list here.
Then Double Click on the "Startup Programs" / Copy and Paste list here.

This is a worm: wucrtupd
Follow these instructions:.

These are a problem: Wcmdmgr.exe - WildTangent crap to be removed sooner or later and Emule.exe - eMule

Then:

Download and install . Now Run it.
If you see this in the Log File have HiJack This "Remove/Repair" it.

Thanks for your help, Brad. I don't know if the problem is solved, but I did get an aweful lot of spyware removed. If I run into the issue again I'll repost.

Oh yeah, and eMule is P2P software. I just installed it, and I was having these symptoms before, so I don't think eMule is the problem. Why do you say it's bad?

Because of it's relationship to spyware. Same deal as Kazaa and many others. The program may be good but it what comes with it that's bad.
Download / Install / Update / and Run .
This will clean any leftover or future Spyware.

I had a similar problem when i had too much stuff on a single usb port. For some reason it slowed my whole PC down. Simply moving my Logitech Mouseman Wheel to the PS2 port with it's provided adapter fixed my problem.

I also recommend using for catching & removing spyware.

Something else you might try, to help clean up your computer and help it run fast & efficiently, is to delete all your *.tmp files (c:\windows\temp\...), and run .
