Disk Repair Utility?

Postby tk4two1 » Fri Mar 12, 2004 4:47 pm

Just wondering what the best disk repair utility there is out there. I have had to much trouble using the built in XP scandisk and am going to get a disk utiliy. I want the best one. Iknow that on the Mac the best utility is DiskWarrior, if this was available for windows I would get it but its Mac only. I also know that the worst utility to put on a Mac is Norton, but how is it on the windows side? Is there a better utility than Norton? As you can probably tell I am a Mac user also. I use my Mac to get things done and use my PC for play. My play PC is giving me crap right now and I think my memory might be failling but I want to rule out my HD first.

What kind of problems are you having using scandisk or chkdsk as it is known as in Windows XP?

whenever I try do use it on my drive it tells me that it needs to schedule the scan for startup, when it reboots it never checks and when I get to my desktop a message comes up about 4 or 5 times saying that the computer has recovered from a major error. If I check for bad sectors then it will scan but freeze anytime during the first, second or third pass.

Have you installed the Recovery Console? If so go into in the Recovery Console and log in. Once in enter the command chkdsk/r. This will run chkdsk and hopefully repair any problems it finds. After you have done this see if the problem you have been having with chkdsk not running correctly from Windows is corrected.

Here is a link to the MSKB on how to install the Recovery Console in case you don't already have it installed.

I second the motion on . I just got it a couple of months ago and I love it. The built-in defragger (Win98SE) sucks.
