It's a little late now, but I'd say that your friend got baited and switched by a site that purports to be a supplier of kazaa-lite, but actually isn't.
Kazaa-Lite is an
illegal crack(says so right in the EULA) of the Kazaa Media Desktop and it is still available (despite Sharman Network's attempts to squash it) at
http://www.zeropaid.com/kazaalite/ . It is FREE OF CHARGE.
There is a site (
http://wwwdotk-litedottk/ -- I post it this way to make the site un-clickable here) that charges for a "Membership" and offers peer to peer file sharing software. Now, I can't check it out any further than that since I have my HOSTS file set to block the actual download site for what i presume to be this scumware (at best) But NOWHERE on the k-lite homepage does it say that the file sharing software available there is actually Kazaa-Lite.
Even though Kazaa-Lite strips the spyware from the Kazaa application, ALL peer to peer file sharing apps are open sewers. I am not familiar with Limewire, but even if there is no spyware bundled with the application (and the Limewire webpage says that there isn't) all peer to peer file sharing must be done with the utmost care.
I will confess that I use both Kazaa-Lite and WinMX to download tunes but:
1) I have my computer set to show ALL file extensions
2) I download ONLY data files (.mp3s)
3) I scan EVERY file I download with an up to date AV scanner
