recovery console/command prompt

Postby sober1 » Mon Mar 22, 2004 11:31 pm

I have tried to use the XP Recovery console, using 1 for the Windows, which keeps coming back invalid.
I am now trying to do the quick format but don't seen to be getting the command correct.
What I have is....
C:\Documents and Settings\Kaye>Format [drive:C] [/Q] [/FS:File-System]
I keep getting invalid parameter.
I have tried to also input with no spaces.
Also, I am wondering if this should be opening at My Documents? And if not, how do I change that?
If someone can help me to find the correct input for the recovery console, I would prefer to go that route.
I have XP Home.
TIA for any help.....Kaye  [/img]

if you format your system, you'll have to re-install everything... all of your files will be erased and you will need to re-load all of your programs. That said, if you want to format your C: drive, the correct Syntax is "format c: /q" (without Quotes) DOS commands are annoying and hard to use, but you don't have to use them much anymore (thankfully)

Thanks Joel.
Now, if I use the recovery console will I have to replace everything? Oh wow, I don't want to do a complete format if I can avoid it.
Also, I have tried putting in the password that I use to log on,[recovery console] but it keeps saying password invalid. I don't understand this as I am the computer Admin.
I went to the registry and changed the security setting to by pass the password. That worked except for when I put in the #1 for, I think it ask the version, that does not come up.
More/Less, I am getting the opposite problem......
But come to think of it, I changed the registry in Windows NT. Should I change that else where? In XP Home it can not be changed by going thru the security panel.
Thanks Kaye

You have to enter the actual Admin password which may or may not be the same as the password as what you use to logon.

Why do you want to do a format and do you have more than one operating system on the PC?

Why don't you just Repair Windows XP? I would think it would be much better than having to do a reinstall and you would not loss what you have installed. By the way when you do a clean install of Windows XP it will format and partition the hard drive before it does the install.

I don't have the Norton software that you mention but can't you reinstall it to correct it?

I didn't go through the Log with a "fine tooth comb" but what I see plainly shows a concern.
I have never seen a system that would run "error free" with two complete AV's running. I'd say this has something to do with your problem. Pick one or the other and completely uninstall the loser.

I have McAfee Firewall and Norton AV.....
The McAfee AV is not installed.

This is the error I am getting with Outlook Express.....

Hanging application msimn.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106. hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
Catergory; [101]
Type: error Event ID: 1002

Also, I have done the OE repair from the microsoft site and it does not fix this problem.

When I boot up this is the error I get from the Norton Password Manager.
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!

Program:...am Files\Norton System Works\Password Manager\AcctMgr.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Also, I have re-installed, but it did not fix this error.

thanks Kaye

Brad is correct. McAfee and Norton don't play nice together. You could just use the free version on ZoneAlarm if you like so you don't have to purchase one.

The Norton Firewall may or may not come along with Norton SystemWorks. It would depend on which version you purchased so you would need to check this before purchasing.

I have Norton System works 2004 but I did not get the one that came with
the firewall, since I had the Mc Firewall. I will take a look at zone alarm.

Did y'all have the chance yet to look at the other stuff and see if it is all okay?

Also, last night I tried to look at something and I got this error message...

unable to open information file
msnmsn.inf
Error code 0x2 at line 2011777033

This leads me to believe that somehow I have deleted something in error, but I can not figure out what.

Thanks for all of your time and help

msnmsn.inf is part of MSN Messenger. Is it uninstalled?
Could we see a new HiJack This Log after you uninstalled McAfee?
