Problems with internet connection

Postby tidalik » Mon Apr 05, 2004 6:57 am

Hiya.

Recently i upgraded a friends Windows 98 os for Windows XP. As he had a whole host of programs on the pc that he did not wish to lose, i simply performed an upgrade, not a clean install which i would have preferred to do as it is an old system, and has not been formatted since he purchased it, almost three years ago.

At the time i used Adaware and Spybot to scoure his system for spyware. Over 100 hits later it was obvious that there was a lot of crap hidden on his system. After removal of all this junk we still were encountering problems, the main one being that his pc will attempt to connect to the internet by itself quite often, at times almost once every couple of minutes. Which you can imagine is quite tedious.

I had a look in Zone Alarm to see which applications were running once the pc had connected to the internet and found that the programs were entitles "Generic Host Process for Win32 Service - svchost.ext" and "Application Layer Gateway Service - alg.exe".

I was wondering if anyone would have any idea what would be causing this automatic attempts to log on to the internet and how could i disable it. And at the very least, how can i change the dialling options so that the internet is not connected to automatically.

Cheers

Internet Explorer / Tools / Internet Options / Connections Tab / Put a check beside "Never Dial my Connection".
Is the Anti-virus Program up-to-date and running?
What about all the Windows Critical Updates?
I'd also download and install . Now Run it and post a copy of the Log File here.
Maybe we can see the culprit.
