Cannot Disk Check my Hardrive

Postby seraph830 » Wed Apr 07, 2004 1:27 am

Hi everyone, got a bit of a problem.

Last night i was cleaning some uneeded stuff off my computer, about 5 gigs worth.

After deleting the 5 gigs didnt free up, I emptied my recycle bin and everything. So I tried to perform an Error check.

The Error check always gets up to Phase 5 and then will freeze. The computer dosent lock up, just the Disk Checking program.

The Hardrive is a 160 gig made by Segate.

I have another hardrive in the machine. My 60 gig master. I tried error checking the 60 gig too, and i get the same problem

please help me

Are you referring to chkdsk?

at least im pretty sure its chkdisk, i right click the hardrive in explorer, go to properties, click the tool tab, click the errorchecking button, select both options there, and then start.

Have you rebooted? Does chkdsk run on the reboot?

i did reboot, and once it booted into that blue screen chkdisk before windows, it did the same thing, froze on Phase 5.

Maybe its not freezing up, but i wait a good 20-30 minutes, and there is no progress.

thanks

There are a couple of things you can do to clean up the disk that might help:

1. Run Disk Cleanup (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup).

2. Download Diskeeper () and do a defrag.

I think it is also better to run ScanDisk than chkdsk.
