Zone Alarm and Windows XP Pro updates

Postby Gecko » Mon Apr 19, 2004 9:44 pm

My neighbor called me over to check their network today it was not working and one of the systems would not boot-up.
They have two systems on a peer-to-peer network, one the ICS host the other the ICS client.
I set this all up for them and installed Zone Alarm as their firewall.

I first asked if they had installed anything new on either system,
they had just updated from Microsoft for the Windows XP pro system (host) when it started to not boot.
So I started it in safe mode and used the event viewer to find this error,
stop: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x805a2ece, 0xf2b5bb64, 0x00000000)
I ran dumpchk.exe to find the Exception Address for the error.
I then ran pstat.exe to locate the driver name from the load address for the Exception Address.
It was Zone Alarm much to my surprise, so I uninstalled Zone Alarm and rebooted the system.
The system booted just fine no BSOD :) I started to check out the network,
I could connect to each system from the other just fine but the ICS would not work on the client.

No matter what I tried I could not get ICS to work,
I checked TCP/IP setting, checked network sharing, checked the clients settings, everything I could think of.
So I removed the ICS from the local network connection, rebooted the host and ran the network connection wizard to setup ICS again. I then used the network connection wizard floppy on the Windows 98 se client system and rebooted when asked.

Well that fixed it, ICS is working again but now they don’t have a firewall and I’m a little leery about reinstalling Zone Alarm again, so my questions are:

1. Has anyone heard about a problem with Windows updates and Zone Alarm?

2. Is there another firewall out there that is as good as Zone Alarm that you would recommend?

3. Has anyone used the firewall that comes with Windows XP and how good is it if you have tried it?

Thank you in advance

To use ZoneAlarm on Windows XP would want to disable the native Windows XP firewall.

You definitely want to get ZoneAlarm or some other firewall working instead of just using the native Windows XP firewall.
