Help! have i recked my motherboard??

Postby funkimonk » Sat May 01, 2004 7:55 pm

Hi,

I'm a pc building noobie and think i've learned my first lesson about pc building.. I put together a pc this morning and turned it on to find that I had no display on the monitor. Being a noob that I am I switched a button on my PSU from 230V to 115V and powered back on. Needless to say the results weren't good, I saw a blue spark from the back of the PSU and now the machine refuses to power up regardless of the position of the 230/115V switch. I just need to know whether this could have damaged my motherboard as well as my PSU? I have no way of testing this as the PSU is obviously broken and I'll be gong for a replacement tomorrow. I'm just hoping the damage will be confined to the PSU, any ideas?

Give it some time. If it was the PSU it might reset itself. I really think it wasn't the PSU because it's designed to handle either 220/115 volts.
What voltage are you running at the wall socket?

thanks for the info, I'm in the uk and our standard is 230 i think. I switched it down to 115 as i thought (noobishly) that this may fix my display problem. Glad you think it's only the PSU that would be damaged, i'll sleep better knowing that I only have to fork out for a new PSU rather than that and a motherboard :)

if you plugged 220 into the p/s when it was switched to 115, you definitely killed The PSU. Knowing that, i'd say there is more of a chance you fried something else, but computer power supplies, generally do a pretty good job of shielding the rest of the components durring a failure like that.
