windows explorer problem

Postby eightbitrebel » Sun May 02, 2004 8:10 pm

hi, im home from college and my family pc needs some help. The computer is a dell 4500s using win xp, not too old but the system will not allow explorer to run any applications. My documents and all system folders cannot be run and internet explorer will not open. Only thing that happens the mouse icon turns to a timer for a second and the desktop and tool bar refreshes as if explorer is getting restarted. I tried using the backup disk to reinstall the system aplications as well as the microsoft updates online and neither has helped. thank you for all your support if anyhting can be done.

I suggest you Repair your Windows XP installation with the Windows XP install CD. You should not have to reinstall any of your applications but you would have to reapply all the MS updates after doing this.

Download and install . Now Run it and post a copy of the Log File here.
At least we can see what processes are running.

Sounds like it could be a virus. You'll need a the use of a second computer.

Pop your hard drive out of the dell, change the setting from cable select to master. Go over to the other one, make sure you have the latest virus updates on it. Shut it down, pull the connectors from the cdrom (ide cable two). and hook it up. support it with a cardboard box

check to see that its reconized in the bios and boot up. Run virus scan and you might be set.

Its important that it not be on cable select and that it is on ide cable two.
If your hard drive boots first, you could end up with two infected drives.[/u]

You've got a mess.
I suggest that you Download / Install / Update / and Run .
Then:
Download and run:
Then turn off System restore and close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix these if they are still there: (Then reboot and run again and post the Log File.)

Can you right click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties? If so click on the System Restore tab and click on Turn off System Restore. After you have the system cleared up go back in and turn System Restore back on.

Did you run HijackThis from the desktop? If so then these are probably the backups from HijackThis so you can restore an entry if you need too. You really should place HijackThis in it's own folder and run it from this folder so the backups are in that folder.

Did you download, install and run SpyBot?

Is Windows Explorer working correctly?
