Internet Explorer Problem

Postby silver5speed » Tue May 04, 2004 6:04 am

I cannot get IE to open pages in a new window, no matter what kind of page it is. Even if I have one running and I try to start another page from the desktop it takes over the one that I already have up. I have tried the internet options/advanced/reuse windows I have turned this option off. I have even tried to reinstall IE6 but for some reason it will not install correctly. The install tells me that IE6 setup has not been approved with the windows logo so it will not allow to install. I hope this narrows down the options of what might be wrong. Please help if possible. Thanks.

if you want to re-install IE6, I'd suggest that you go to the add/remove programs control pannel, and remove IE6, then re-install via the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site

have you tried the spyware and virus route? If you have an installed virus scanner, make sure you have new virus defs. If you don't have one, try housecall antivirus, which is a free, web based virus scanner, or install a program such as Avast or AVG antivirus.

For spyware, 3 utilities are quite popular and useful. Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot - Search and destroy which are programs that search your computer for spyware and remove it. They both have freeware versions, and I recommend runnning both, as they compliment each other well. HiJackThis is more of a manual spyware remover. It baisically searches for programs that start at boottime via about 6 places, and looks for programs attaching themselves to Internet explorer. It will return mostly valid programs, that you want to be booting. Run the program, hit the Scan button, then the Save Log button, and then copy/paste the text results here.

My suggestion would to try antivirus and spyware programs first. If adaware/spybot don't help, then run hijackthis, and post the results.

If we've still not found anything then I suggest going through the trouble of re-installing IE6.

If still not working, try another browser out such as Mozilla or Opera

Read the article below, if it does not apply to you I would try to repair IE from Add/Remove Programs options. What O.S. are you using? In Windows 98 Start>Settings>Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs. Click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools. Click on it and click add/remove. A seperate box will come up, click Repair.
In XP read this article

For an Internet Explorer 5 and 6 version of this article, see 281679.
SYMPTOMS
You may experience either of the following symptoms:
When you right-click a Web address on a Web page, and then click Open in New Window, the Web page may not open in a new window.
When you click a link on a Web page that uses scripting to open a new window, the new window may not open, or you may receive the following error message:

Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line:
Char:
Error: No such interface supported
Code: 0

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
CAUSE
This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
You installed a program that does not correctly register the interfaces in the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface

You removed Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 after you used it to create a program that uses the Webbrowser control that the Shdocvw.dll file gives you.
Some Internet Explorer registry information is missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 actxprxy.dll.
Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in actxprxy.dll succeeded.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll.
Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in shdocvw.dll succeeded.
Restart your computer.
This problem may also occur if the registration information is missing or damaged for some Windows or Internet Explorer files. If the steps that are discussed earlier in this article do not work, repeat the steps to register some additional Windows and Internet Explorer files. To do so, use the following commands:
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 actxproxy.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 pdm32.dll

Hope this helps

Internet Explorer can not be repaired like it was done in the previous versions of Windows. Go to the below link for the correct way to Repair IE in Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;Q318378

Once you have repaired IE you would need to reapply all the MS IE updates.
