Ok, I think I have the answer to this. The 802.11g is not an absolute standard yet - it is still a pre-standard. As such there will be variation's particulary when it comes to backward compatibility of new 802.11g products with old computers. The 802.11a and 802.11b are both standards and, as such, are made to a precise specification. My guess is that they will work with older computers, no problem. Now, 802.11b will work with other 802.11b or 802.11g systems but not with 802.11 a.
In my case, where I have an ADSL wireless modem/router and a 802.11g network card in my dell xp machine but two old machines that will not load the 802.11g, I propose to install 802.11b cards on the old machines to overcome the incompatibility issue. That';s my theory. Does anyone know of anyone, anywhere, who has got an 802.11g wireless card working with an older computer??
