Excel quit working

Postby bmiller » Sun May 09, 2004 3:24 am

I am using Windows XP and have OfficeXP that was purchased and installed with my machine. Have been using mainly Word and occasionally Excel. A few days ago, I attempted to open an Excel file and window popped up saying that MS office was preparing to install. I hit let it try to install, then it says to insert the disc. I dig out the Office disc and attempt to let it find the files it is looking for but seems to be unable to find "sberet.msi". My Word documents still function normally. It's like suddenly Excel has been deleted or uninstalled...any suggestions?

thanks..Brian

You could repair your MS Office to see if this fixes the problem. This will basically reinstall Office. You do this by going to Add/Remove and clicking on Change/Remove like you are going to remove Office but on the next screen you will be given an option to Repair Office.

Check out these:

OfficeXP

Extract the files to the Update directory

Start / Run
msiexec /p c:\update\MAINSP1_Admin.msp /a c:\office\your.msi SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE
(where your.msi file is the actual one depending on the version of OfficeXP (PROPLUS.MSI, SBERET.MSI)
Repeat for any additional extracted msp files .

All you need to do is create a new CD with the updated source files and use this for future installations.

Cactus,
hmm..should have thought of that....
okay, but this is strange. I start digging into my directories to find office. once there, i poke around and accidently open up the MS Office tool bar. Out of curiosity I click on Excel, and it opens perfectly. I close it down and go back and click on one of the Excel files that had been giving me problems..again no problems
Not sure what happened, but glad it seems to be working now...thanks for the help...Brian
