problem with modem

Postby smokeyzoo » Mon May 10, 2004 12:43 am

I have a problem, I have to dial up twice to get online. The first time i dialup the noise of the modem loops a couple of times, And the second time i dialup its fine. I asked my isp to help but they say its my puter. i have also asked a puter shop but no help there either. Ok, I have a hewlett packard pavilion 6701 (i know its outta date) with xp pro and a conexant modem with new drivers. any help?

Its not really that uncommon to have trouble connecting with diap up modems.Theres too many things that tend to effect the "handshake" process, static being the biggest. How old are the phone lines in your area? That usually makes a difference..There also could be some corrosion in the junction box on your house.

Just a thought... Do you have the "Wait for Dial Tone before Dialing" box checked in the Modems Properties?

ive used that thing to tell me what modem i have, i needed it to the new driver. as for dialup setting, ive got a cd from my isp that did it for me. its a 4yr old modem, it might be easier to buy a new one. im having money problems, whats a cheap external modem worth? and i must add, i live in Australia.

Did you do an upgrade or a clean installation of XP Pro? An upgrade may be causing your problems

2 things.

1. Be happy you have the internet right now, cuz it could die on you ANYTIME.

2. You formatted without backing up your drivers and/or important files?
