DirectX problems version 8.1 i have no sound

Postby Seth » Wed Jul 23, 2003 12:29 am

When I installed red faction II (game) I put directx 8.1 onto my computer. I am not sure weather it was on the next startup that the sound went out or not but it was within 48 hrs that my sound quit working. installing red faction II was the only change i made to my computer around the time it happened so im preatty sure thats what caused it.
List of problems that came when the sound stopped working:

No sound
have to reinstall direct x on every start up if i want any games to work
I get error messeges from winamp and win media player
no volume control in bottom right

I am running windows 98
1.8 gigahertz
80 gig hd
soyo sy-k7vta pro (motherboard)
56k modem
via ac 97 audio controler (soundcard)
nvidia geforce2 mx/mx 400 (64mb) (vidio card)

I have tried reinstalling directx, reinstalling sound card ,Unistalling and reinstalling multimedia in controll panel.

sound works when i run xp but not windows 98

I know its alot of problems but any help would be apresiated

The first thing I'd do is see if the volume is turned on. Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control. Check to see if the volume is muted or turned down. (If you want the Volume Control back in the System Tray start by going to Control Panel / Multimedia / Audio Tab and check the box next to "Show Volume Control on the Taskbar")
If the volume isn't muted or turned off, I'd uninstall the game to see if that was the problem. Did you download the game or did it come on a cd?
