Undetected Virus? HELP!

Postby biggee » Thu May 13, 2004 3:09 pm

Ok I'm just about at the end of my tether with this one....
I'm right about ready to drop my PC in the bin and switch back to my mac.

Ok Sasser. Nasty little germ but really I blame microsoft so I'm not gonna moan on about it.. But....

I have what appears to be the symptoms of Sasser - but I've run about 10 different virus progs, stinger, sasser removal tools and thats not even mentioning the MS critical updates for XP.

Still no joy and I don't know what else to try..

Here's the score...

Everything is irie - all running nice & tidy.

Suddenly the icon turns into the 'CD Loading' icon then the PC hangs for about 10 secs then restarts. *This can happen hours apart or minutes apart there seems to be no pattern other than it only seems to happen when connected to the net.

Anyway - on Restart it doesn't look in the C drive for the system folder and says it can't find a boot record off CD. So after a forced restart (power off) it will boot up fine.

Also, and this is my favourite part - I can't enter the Set Up page F2, in fact can't enter anything on boot up. All I can do is get to the page where you can select which mode to start up in. But, here we go, I can't select anything other than 'Start Windows Normally' - The keyboard doesn't respond at all - not even 'Enter'

What have I tried...

Virtually everything. According to Mcaffe, NAV, Stinger & the countless MS virus fixes I have run I have no infections on my computer at all.

Have I done anything silly recently?

You mean apart from trust Microsoft  ?

Nope - not opened any email attachments, always run a firewall, not installed any new programs or hardware - the only thing i did was connect a LAN cable (I usually use wireless) a created a network bridge which I deleted straight after as I couldn't get it to work properly. Thats the only thing that has changed in my system for months.
I should add I do play Halo on this PC on-line - and have read about other people having restart issues with it - but it was working fine for months, this has only just started to happen.

My System?

Athlon 1.6, Windows XP SP.1, Wireless, 768mb ram...

I dunno man - I'm gutted. Please somebody end my misery :(

Cheers

Sounds hardware related. I would run a CPU monitor program to see how hot it runs. Perhaps it's getting a bit over heated.

First I'd have your AV do a Bios/Boot scan.
Now, turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

After some though on this post I would probably re-install your O.S.
You obviously are having multiple problems and without being able to boot to safe mode or get into the bios you must have missing or corrupted operating system files. Put the XP disc in and see if you can repair your system files. If you choose not to go that route, do a fresh install.

If any mod or pc tech feels this is not the action to take please post.

sounds hardware to me but....

Postby chrisc » Mon May 17, 2004 7:06 pm

Sounds like a hardware issue but I'd try a clean install first. When I get problems like yours I'll buy a cheap drive-whatever is on sale this week at bestbuy, usuall a 40 to 60gb- and do a clean install on it. I always take my old drive out and leave the new drive as the master. If this works fine, then you can hook up your other drive as the slave and transfer any files you need off of it. Then I'd reformat the original drive, if no problems with the drive reinstall onto that drive(after making it the master again with only it hooked up) and see what happens. Don't register xp until you have it working fine. If the proble still exist with the new drive then it's a harware issue-motherboard,cpu,memory or any of the other cards you have installed.

If there are times when you can't even press F2 to get into the BIOS, I would have to agree with PCGuy - at this stage it hasn't even detected the hard drive, let alone loaded windows. I;d certainly try & reseat all components incase of connection problems :)
