Cd- writing problem

Postby chip » Sat May 22, 2004 3:15 pm

i have a problem burning cd on my newly installed LG DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo GCC-4520B. I use the bundled Nero 5 as my burner software and it will just give you a messages "write failed", "invalid write state", "could not perform end track" at around 10-20% of the burning process. I replaced nero with roxio eacy cd but it wont recognized the drive, so i returned to nero. I tried to set my speed from every possible compbination from the highest down to the lowest, i tried to use different brand of cd's, disabled screensaver and closed all other apps, but still no luck.
Somebody told me to change my PIO and DMA settings for the DVD-ROM/CD-rw on the cmos setup, or to tweak it's setting in Device manager properies, and i have done them all but still it will give the same result.Even tried to disable 32-bit transfer and ide burst mode on the cmos, still nothing.I tried every possible combination on the cmos that's connected to this, even tried to overclock my cpu, transferred this drive from primary slave to secondary master and slave, still nothing.
I tried to look for driver and firmware update for this drive but i cannot find any.
Tried to flash my award BIOS to 2001 version(the latest), same result.
I even upgrade my OS to Win xp (before i was using win 98se)and i tried to use the built-in cd burner of Xp, still no luck with error "Cannot complete cd writing wizard"
Reading from this drive as well as watching DVD movies has no problem except that it will just not write.
This drive is making me nuts!!It's costing me lots of destroyed CDs!!
Do you have any idea about this drive? Maybe i miss something perhaps. I use PIII 450Mhz, 250MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive.

Before installing Nero make sure the Drive is installed correctly first.
Uninstall from the device manager, completly remove the device and its drivers.
Then reboot....let Windows detect it again, and chk to see that everything in the Device Manager is OK...no yellow exclamation marks.

When installing Nero just install Nero Burning Rom.....don't install the IN-CD portion of the installation.

Try that....

*EDIT
I would set the jumpers on the CDrom to MASTER and connect it to IDE2,put it on the first open plug on the chain, not the last 1.

Before i installed Nero a week ago, i checked every thing the setting of drive from the CMOS and device manager, evrything was ok, and i tried every possible location and position of the drive on my PC's connectors. And i said, only the burning was the problem, reading is not.
I need not worry now about nero coz i repartition my hard drive and instaled win xp from using that same dvd/cdrw combo drive.
Right now, i am using only the built in cd writer wizard of xp, and near the end of the burning, it will stop and display the message "Cannot complete Cd writer wizard".
I know it's not a program problem , coz i use this before with win98 with the same error result. I think it has something to do with this drive, could be defective, or there is some setting in my mobo or cmos that's making this error

I bought some reputable cds at a real steal price and they worked good. the second batch drove me nuts. I couldn't burn a damn thing without an error. These cd's were 32 speed (I believe)--Just on a lark, I set the burn speed to 8 and everyone of the rest burned aok. give it a try

This sounds like an ASPI layer/driver problem to me.
I would try downloading the latest ASPI drivers from .
After extracting the download there will be a program called ASPICHK.EXE in the folder named Adaptec.
I would run this first to see if you already have any ASPI driver installed and that they are working properly.
If you don’t have any ASPI driver installed then I would install them using the ASPIINST.EXE program in the same directory.
